Q355 A/B/C/D/E vs S355 JR/J0/J2/K2/NL: Structural Steel Grade Suffix Guide

q355vsen355

When you source hot rolled steel sections (H-beam, IPE, HEA, HEB, channel UPN, angle bar) from China or global mills, you will frequently encounter two mainstream structural steel systems: GB Q355 series (Chinese standard) and EN S355 series (European standard).

Many buyers mistakenly treat Q355B = S355JR, Q355D = S355J2 as fully equivalent materials. This is a common costly mistake in steel procurement. This article clarifies the suffix naming rule, Charpy V-notch impact requirement, service temperature and substitution limits.

1. Naming Rule Difference

GB / T 1591‑2018: Q355 A, B, C, D, E

  • Q stands for Yield strength (Chinese Pinyin “Qu”)
  • The number 355 means minimum yield strength 355 MPa for thickness ≤16 mm
  • The suffix A/B/C/D/E = quality grade, classified by Charpy V-notch impact test temperature
  • Impact test specimen: longitudinal Charpy V test, minimum KV₂ ≥34 J
GradeTest TemperatureImpact Energy KV₂Typical Application
Q355ANo impact test requiredNot testedNon‑critical indoor structure, rarely accepted for export
Q355B+20 ℃≥34 JMost common stock grade, indoor steel structure, normal ambient temperature
Q355C0 ℃≥34 JOutdoor structure, mild cold climate
Q355D-20 ℃≥34 JCold region, machinery base, outdoor steel frame
Q355E-40 ℃≥34 JExtreme cold service condition, limited stock, normally produced by order

Note: Q355A is almost phased out for international projects. Most overseas consultants will reject Q355A due to no impact guarantee.

EN 10025: S355 JR, J0, J2, K2, NL

  • S stands for Structural steel
  • Number 355 means minimum yield strength 355 MPa for thickness ≤16 mm
  • EN standard does NOT use A/B/C/D/E suffix. It uses JR / J0 / J2 / K2 / NL for impact classification
  • Impact test specimen: longitudinal Charpy V test, minimum KV₂ ≥27 J (except K2)
GradeTest TemperatureImpact Energy KV₂Typical Application
S355JR+20 ℃≥27 JGlobal stock grade, IPE/HEA/UPN sections, normal temperature projects
S355J00 ℃≥27 JOutdoor structure, low temperature down to 0℃
S355J2-20 ℃≥27 JCold climate, heavy load structure
S355K2-20 ℃≥40 JDynamic load, bridge, high toughness requirement
S355NL-40 ℃≥27 JFine grain normalized steel, EN 10025‑3, arctic / low temperature wind turbine project

Important: S355NL is fine grain steel with normalized delivery condition. It has strict microalloy and grain control requirements, which Q355E does not have.

2. Approximate Matching Table (Only for Reference, NOT Equivalent)

GB GradeApprox. EN MatchCore Gap Reminder
Q355BS355JRQ355B higher impact value (34J vs 27J)
Q355CS355J0Same temperature class, different impact threshold
Q355DS355J2Q355D KV₂ ≥34J > S355J2 27J
Q355ES355NLNL is fine grain normalized steel; Q355E without mandatory fine grain requirement
No GB equivalentS355K2-20℃ ≥40J, higher toughness than Q355D

3. The Most Critical Rule: Can We Substitute Them Directly?

Short answer: NO automatic substitution.

  1. If drawing and specification clearly specify EN 10025: You cannot replace S355JR with Q355B directly, even Q355B has higher impact energy. The MTC (Mill Test Certificate) must comply with EN standard. Third-party inspectors and Eurocode 3 consultants usually reject GB certificates.
  2. If drawing only specifies yield strength 355MPa without locking standard: Substitution is allowed only with written approval from engineer, owner or consultant. You need to submit material comparison sheet and MTC sample for MAR (Material Approval Request).
  3. Substitution rule within the same standard: Higher quality grade can substitute lower grade. ✅ Q355D can replace Q355B / Q355C ✅ S355J2 can replace S355JR / S355J0 ❌ Lower grade cannot replace higher grade

A very frequent trap: Material grade substitution ≠ section substitution. Q355 GB sections (GB/T706) and EN sections (EN10365 IPE/HEA/UPN) are different dimension systems. You cannot swap IPE for GB H beam just because you change the material grade.

4. Practical Sourcing Tips for Steel Buyers

  • For European, Middle East, African, Southeast Asian EPC projects: S355JR is the most widely accepted stock grade.
  • For domestic Chinese projects or buyers who accept GB certificate: Q355B is the mainstream stock grade. If Q355B is out of stock, Q355C is the first recommended alternative within GB standard.
  • For cold region and wind power projects: Confirm whether they require fine grain normalized S355NL or regular Q355E.
  • Check MTC carefully: The standard marked on MTC must match project specification.

FAQ

Q1: Is Q355B equal to S355JR?

A: They are approximate matches for normal temperature service, but not equivalent. Different standard, different chemical limits, different Charpy acceptance value and MTC requirement.

Q2: Can S355K2 replace Q355D?

A: S355K2 has higher impact energy (40J@-20℃), better toughness. Still need engineer written approval for substitution.

Q3: What if Q355B is out of stock?

A: First choice: Q355C (same GB standard). Second option: S355JR, subject to client approval.

Q4: What does +N mean on S355J2+N?

A: +N = Normalized delivery condition, commonly used for thick plate and heavy sections.
